The Brief

This staircase project was going to be an interesting one. The client’s home was undergoing an extensive refurbishment from the ground up. They wanted a staircase that stood out and became a real talking point within the large kitchen/dining room it was to be situated in.

The clients had done their research beforehand and knew exactly what style and look they wanted for the staircase and landing, so it was our job to make it happen! Even though we had various pictures to work from regarding style we still needed the clients to visit our workshops to discuss and fine-tune details to make sure it was 100% what they envisaged.

Action taken

Once we had built the main structure of the staircase, we assembled it in our workshops and invited the clients over to take a look. All they had to do was decide on some final details like the discrete drawer we fitted underneath the large oak landing. This was a push-to-open functionality to avoid cluttering the look with handles. Once this was decided, we headed to the client’s home to begin fitting.

One of the challenges we encountered on site was that the corner of the upstairs hallway needed supporting structurally, but the clients didn’t want a chunky newel post going up to the ceiling. They didn’t want it to spoil the look so we came up with the idea to run a solid steel spindle right up into the loft and connect it to structural timber supports within the roof space. The long spindle was to appear to grow straight out of the top of a standard height newel post so that’s exactly what we did.

We also used angled steel spindles for the staircase balustrading which was very neat looking especially lined up perfectly with the spindles above.

Outcome

Once the carpets and decoration had been completed, we popped back to get some pictures and wow did it all look lovely!

The finished home was stunning and the staircase and landing really did look the part. It not only looked great, but we were able to size the treads and risers to achieve a really comfortable staircase to use. The powder-coated, satin-sheen steel spindles made a nice change to the glass or timber balustrade style. We were really pleased with the finishing look.

JLA Joinery created exactly the solution we were looking for. The service we received and the workmanship was first class. We now know more about the lexicon of stairs and staircases than we did when we started this amazing journey and what a pleasure it has been. JLA Joinery’s professionalism was evident throughout. We now have a ‘Wow-Factor’ staircase in our open plan space which is a credit to those who worked on it and a testament to the attention to detail, workmanship and courteousness we experienced throughout. Thank you – we love it!
