The Brief

This stunning front door and porch project was the first job for this particular client, but evolved into a number of additional projects… so keep an eye out for further updates from this lovely and freshly renovated family home!

To kick off the project, we had a couple of meetings with the client to discuss their ideas and plans, before looking to the internet, social media, and industry magazines for inspiration.

Action taken

Once the designs had been finalised and approved by the client, we began the manufacturing process. We still insist on a 1:1 scale drawing of the door and most of the porch, for the client to view in our workshops. We have found this to be the best way to give the client a true insight into the final size and shape of the project.

We used a hardwood called Sapele for the front door and its frame, and also all the porch components, as the client’s plans were to apply a black Sadolin oil. This oil still allows the grain to be seen through the finish, but the colour of the wood is covered – as you can see from the pictures provided.

Outcome

The finished frontage of the house now looks stunning and impressive. It’s all finished, decorated, and the house has been rendered. The black finish to the woodwork makes for a great contrast against the white render, and as a protected hardwood it will last a lifetime.

Jim and the JLA crew are skilled craftsmen of the carpentry trade. They have added a premium finish to a number of areas in our 2-year renovation of our family home and we would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone looking for fine woodwork projects in their own homes.

We have engaged with Jim and more recently his son James on our very large front door and ‘statement piece’ porch which has added a lot of kerb appeal. We then had the team create a number of smaller-but-no-less-important pieces including the oak window sills, breakfast bar, oak beams and office desk.

We had a clear vision in mind as to what we wanted from the team and I was probably a demanding customer at times! However nothing seemed too much trouble for Jim and it was an enjoyable experience working with the JLA team to ensure the finished products matched our expectations.

Thoroughly recommend.
