The Brief
We were grateful to have been contacted through our website with a request to survey and quote for a new front door to be made from oak.
The client warned us that it was a very wide aperture meaning the door would be extremely heavy… which turned out to be completely true, at over 1.2 meters wide. This was going to be a big one!
Action taken
Like all projects, we start with accurate measurements of the existing door and its opening in the building, once we have all the sizes needed we then invite the customer to our workshops to run through finer details, view a 1:1 scale drawing of the door and frame, and generally figure out all the details and specification.
The customer’s home is positioned well into the Sussex countryside and as such there are no streetlights and very little lighting on her property, so they requested an oak-hinged mini door to cover the glazed portion of the front door at night to feel a bit cosier and safer and to avoid any unwanted visitors looking in!
Outcome
The finished door was incredibly heavy to move around and fit but once installed on 6x heavy-duty hinges it was then very easy to open and close. The finish applied was Osmo satin, exterior, and UV protection oil – which does a lovely job of protecting the joinery and really making the grain stand out!
Choosing JLA to work on my replacement front door was a good decision.
JLA went through all the best sympathetic design options, put together a timeframe, invited me to their workshop to view progress and offered their advice on finishes and future care of my door. This was very welcome and reflects their considerable care, craftsmanship and experience.
The end result is stunning and I am thrilled I chose JLA for this important project.
