Green Oak Staircase, Southampton

The Brief

We work very closely with clients to ensure that all projects are created to perfection and meet our client’s expectations, just like with this green oak staircase we recently handcrafted in Southampton. This client approached us with this project that would be slightly new to us, our skilled team and expertise helped us complete the project successfully with precision.

This project was our first green oak staircase, this was a unique project for us as most of our projects usually consist of using a particular timber material, which goes through many drying and curing processes before we get our hands on it. Green Oak differs from this due to it being cut from the tree and not left to dry out at all i.e. the wood is very naturally wet.

action taken

The purpose of doing this staircase in Green Oak was to match up and blend in perfectly with its beautiful surroundings which happened to be a newly built extension featuring many oak beams and lovely big windows.

In order to make sure the timber was an exact match to the other features of the property, we sourced the timber from the same supplier the builders used for the extension. We then set about creating the extremely heavy Green Oak stairs – Green oak is very heavy in comparison to its dried-out joinery grade counterparts because the timber is still wet.

outcome

To ensure the finished staircase looked the part we also organised and fitted some painted steel balustrading which added to the overall robust feel and broke up all of the timber nicely. To enhance this very unique staircase we also added an oak handrail to the steel balustrading to make it more comfortable on the hand and enhance the very special staircase. Overall, the finished staircase looked proportionate to the rest of the existing timbers which was the goal set by the client.
