Pair of pine staircases

This Chichester based customer replaced her hard to ascend/descend spiral staircase with a matching pair of bespoke pine staircases.

The Brief:

We were initially contacted through our website by a customer in Chichester who wanted to remove their spiral staircase and fit a more conventional set of straight flight bespoke pine staircases with landings to make the most of the space. The new staircases would create a focal point for the property and most importantly, make it easier and safer to gain access to the bedroom.

Action taken:

Due to a beam stretching across the ceiling space the staircase required some complex planning and design. The beam needed to be removed, meaning a structural engineer was needed to advise how to safely cut the beam out of the way and yet still support the loft conversion above.

You can see here in the before and after removing the beam pictures a supporting rod from the painted beam stretching up to a large structural oak beam, meaning we could safely cut the rest of the section away.

Before and after the beam was removed:

Once secured we could then remove the old spiral staircase and set about creating two new landings for the new straight flight staircases to join on to.

New landing

After the landings and two staircases were fitted with matching handrails we could then fit the toughened glass using some modern brushed stainless steel brackets. Together with the client we chose glass so that natural light from the Velux window above was spread around what would have otherwise potentially been a dull space. Finally we coated the pine with a clear coat protective finish to ensure its longevity.

Outcome:

This was a satisfying job to bring to an end as all our efforts in the design stage, and time spent carefully marking out, paid off – everything fitted perfectly, without a single issue. The customer is delighted to have easy access to her bedroom and a feature staircase that casts light around the space beautifully.

Handmade pine staircase chichester

Living in a small house and wanting to maximise the use of space, I decided to replace an awkward spiral staircase with two pine staircases to access the loft conversion bedroom and create a mezzanine platform as well. JLA’S work on the project was really excellent, demonstrating very good craftsmanship and enthusiasm for the job. They were an excellent company to deal with: friendly, professional and very hardworking and I am very happy to recommend them.
