5 Benefits of eco construction and up-cycling

Shocking data released in 2017 tells us that, as a result of climate change, the world in 2016 was at its hottest average temperature for around 115,000 years. As the sea levels continue to rise and the polar ice caps continue to melt, the need to become ever more environmentally friendly has become paramount. And one of the best ways to make a change is by using eco construction techniques around the home. Here are five practical reasons to make your new or existing property greener.

1. Cutting costs

While the adoption of new techniques may be initially expensive, the long-term benefits are extremely attractive. Our non-renewable water and energy sources are becoming more costly every year, but solar power, wind power and rainwater are to all intents and purposes free of charge once you have the processes in place. A few modifications to any home can make a huge difference.

2. Reducing your carbon footprint

Every effort to use the earth’s resources more efficiently will result in a reduction in the size of your carbon footprint. To make a difference, you don’t have to completely renovate your existing home or up sticks and move to a brand new property. If you’d like to reduce your impact on the environment, upcycling wood into furniture or reusing rain water are good ways to make a start.

3. Using more natural resources

In most homes up and down the country, you’ll find a great many items manufactured from plastics and other man-made compounds. The principles of eco construction include using recycled wood to inspire beautiful and practical household projects, such as this glorious bespoke staircase we designed and installed from reclaimed oak. Skirting boards, doors, window frames and even furniture can all come from wood that was once considered obsolete.

4. A safer environment for you and your family

We have seen a great many reports in the media about the potential dangers of plastics in and around the home. Those who apply the principles of eco construction can avoid the potentially lethal toxins which are found in many man-made substances. The safety of materials is an important issue when planning new homes or improvements to existing properties.

5. Increasing the value of your property

Environmentally friendly homes are extremely popular among buyers these days, in part because they are generally far less expensive to run. While your initial outlay may be relatively high, once the project is complete you will soon start to reap the financial rewards.

The use of locally sourced materials is understandably common in eco construction, and it’s always advisable to commission the help and guidance of local tradespeople who are keen to lessen the environmental impact of such projects. Here at JLA Joinery, we will be happy to discuss your plans in further detail, so please get in touch at any time.
